New York Bike Messagers Affected by WTC Attack

NYC messengers running supplies for NYC hospitals (13 Sep 01)

A growing group of New York bike messengers has been running supplies back and forth for Manhattan area hospitals during the aftermath of the WTC attacks. Hospitals were having trouble communicating needs for vital supplies through clogged phone lines when several messengers volunteered their services and radios, and started running deliveries between area hospitals and the trauma center at pier 61.

Unidentified bike messenger confirmed killed in WTC attack (12 Sep 01)

Unfortunately it looks like there was a casualty from our community in all of yesterdays mess. There's no positive ID yet, but many witnesses told an account of a bike courier near WTC that was hit by falling debris and killed instantly. This story was carried by the New York Post, and confirmed by many of our friends that have called us in the wake of the disaster. Let's all put our prayers or thoughts together for the family of our fallen comrade, and for everyone else affected by this travesty, and keep hope alive for people still trapped.

From: "Wendy Fallin" (fiveightnine@hotmail.com) Subject: [messengers] What I got about NYC

Since no one from NYC is posting (perhaps they can't, I know I couldn't call in) I will let everyone know what I know, which isn't too much.

This is from an email I got from Tone in New York:

"Wendy, I am ok. I don't know for sure about the others you mentioned, but apparently many of the messengers gathered at two of the main messenger spots and from what people said when I went down there everyone seems to be accounted for. I wouldn't think there would have been any or that many messengers at all at that time of the morning, so don't worry too much.

I have been getting calls and e-mails from all over the world and it's nice to know messengers are standing by us at this time of tragedy. I'm glad I can report that as of yet no one I know was injured or killed in the attacks. A few messengers I know and spoke to at the park spoke of how they watched within ten blocks as the towers collapsed and they had to get the fuck away as the cloud of smoke blew through the streets, but they were completely fine and far enough away not to be in any danger.

Thank you for contacting me/us. Just make sure you ride safe... and if you can tell everyone to give blood in case they need it here in New York or ANYWHERE in general."

I think Tone makes a good point, we should donate blood. There are some things you should keep in mind before you run down to your local Red Cross. First, they are asking that you make an appointment first and not just come straight down. This way they can accommodate everyone and you won't have to wait in some horrendous line. Second, you can't give blood if you have had a tattoo within the past year. And third, you can't give blood if you have lived or visited England for more than four months any time in the past couple of years. Ironically, the organization that originally didn't want to screen its blood for the AIDS virus is now worried about Mad Cow Disease.

I sincerely hope no one had friends or relatives in any of those buildings. If people in New York need anything they should feel free to email me.

Take care and ride safe.

Wendy
